FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM
The five core Pillars of Islam are:
- Shahadah – recital of Islamic faith (reading of the Holy Qur’an)
- Salah – obligatory prayer performed five times a day, as ordered by Allah (SWT), to be performed before sunrise, at midday, late afternoon, after sunset and between sunset and midnight
- Zakat – a charitable donation based on expendable income; the payment of zakat is popular during the holy month of Ramadan as payments made during this time hold greater reward for the donor
- Sawm – the fast during Ramadan which all able Muslims are expected to observe
- Hajj – the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that all able Muslims must make at least once in their lifetime
During the auspicious month of Ramadan, we must take time to reflect on our faith and all of the blessings that we have received. This is also a time of contemplation, where we can observe the fast and actively work to purify ourselves in accordance with the teachings outlined in the Holy Qur'an
